International Preference Indicator

The International Preference Indicator (IPI next gen) helps people identify ways in which they can channel their energy more effectively when working internationally.

Through a questionnaire, report and a recommended set of group learning activities, it helps participants map the importance they attach – and the instinctive focus they currently bring – to a set of 5 ‘push’ and 5 ‘pull’ qualities for working across cultures. It draws on peer sharing & support as a springboard for personal development, thus supporting the facilitation skills of the licensed practitioner.

What you’ll get

  • A web-based questionnaire plus interactive online report & materials.

  • Based on a concept of 10 push and pull qualities we bring when channelling our energy across cultures.

  • A 4-stage learning journey that takes you from completion of the questionnaire through a group learning experience and on to a targeted development.

  • IPI offers a view of how you balance the need when operating across geographic boundaries to push forward your own views clearly and authentically while building rapport and empathy.

  • Your scores and their interpretation help you to reflect on how agile you are now in handling diversity in complex global contexts.

  • It’s an opportunity to think through how you instinctively connect with international colleagues, customers and partners, and consider other ways of getting things done.

  • By integrating peer consultation and coaching, the IPI provides a structured dialogue that generates practical ideas for development.

  • Explore in an intact team context the styles that individual team members bring to working globally, maximising strengths and compensating for gaps.

How does it work?

Step 1:

Completion of Questionnaire

Start the IPI journey by sharing the link for the online questionnaire, which takes about 20 minutes to complete. This can automatically generate an interactive online report that enables the participant to arrive at a workshop having begun to explore the energy they bring to working across cultures. The results of the report can alternatively be held back to a later stage in the learning journey.

Step 2:

Participation in group learning actvities

The coachee takes the time to navigate through the report at their own pace. They utilize the video guides and interactive features to delve into the scores and understand their implications. Thy reflect on the feedback to identify how they currently manage cultural differences and where there is room for improvement.

Step 3:

Rating your current role

Next the participants complete a Job Rating Scale, and share in pairs. This is a table where participants first rate the importance of each of the 10 IPI qualities in light of their present role. They then plot on the same table the scores revealed by their IPI reports. This identifies potential gaps where to develop in their present role participants need to realign the energy they bring to certain qualities.

Step 4:

Peer consultation and support

Having identified gaps, participants participate in Solution Circles where they share gaps and development needs and get support from fellow participants in how to approach development.
